Growing Tall
Even in seasons of comfort, God calls us to grow. Discover how a simple dandelion points to deeper spiritual maturity—and how to keep reaching toward the Son.

The other day, I was mowing the grass when my sister shared something simple but powerful:

When dandelions are in the shadows, they grow tall to reach the sun—but when they’re surrounded by short grass already in the light, they stay small.

It got me thinking—about people. About character. About comfort.

When we’re “already in the sun”—when life feels good, easy, comfortable—do we stop growing?

It’s easy to believe that growth only happens when we have to grow—when we’re challenged or in the dark. But what if God calls us to grow even in the light?

What if spiritual maturity isn’t just about surviving storms, but about standing taller in the sunshine?

In the Bible, we can look to Daniel for an example. He was placed in a position of influence in Babylon—a place full of luxury, opportunity, and comfort. He could’ve blended in, kept quiet, and stayed “low to the ground.”

But Daniel chose to grow tall—even when he didn’t have to.

He prayed three times a day, even when it put his life at risk (Daniel 6:10).

He lived with integrity, even when no one was watching.

His growth wasn’t born from desperation—it came from devotion.

Maybe you’re in a season that feels calm. Or maybe you’ve settled into routines.

But here’s the question: Are you still reaching toward the light?

Are you still growing in faith, in character, in calling—or have you stopped because things feel “good enough”?

The danger of comfort is that it quietly tells us, “You’re fine where you are.”

But God often whispers, “Come higher.”

Just like the dandelion, your environment might not push you to grow.

But the Son still calls you upward.

Don’t settle for staying low just because it’s easy.

Reach anyway. Grow anyway.

Even when you don’t have to.

That’s what builds character.

That’s how we become more like Christ.

And just when I thought that was the end of it…

I found out recently that the name dandelion comes from the French Dent De Lion—Meaning “Tooth of the Lion.” And something about that just stopped me. It’s such a powerful name for a very overlooked, yellow flower; weed even. People often tear them out the ground without a second thought. It carries a name that sounds fierce, royal, even ancient. And that made me think of the Lion of Judah, Christ himself. How incredible is it that we can observe anything in God’s creation and it leads to Christ in some way?! Even this ignored weed is comparable to the likes of Christ. How much greater are we, who are made in the image of God? Read that again. It has made me think, maybe things we call small or ordinary have more depth than we realise. Maybe some of what grows low to the ground is actually touched by something wild and strong. Holy, even.

A Closing Prayer:

Father in heaven, we come before You humbled. We ask You to help us see where we can grow toward You. Show us the areas of our lives that are still short—places we’ve stopped reaching. We surrender them to You and give You all the glory. Amen.

- Nathanael Shepherd Founder & CEO

This post was shaped with the help of AI tools to refine and organize my thoughts.

Sign up to my newsletter so you don’t miss my next blog here

My personal instagram

Follow my photography on instagram

Shop latest products here

Buy me a coffee here

A reflection on spiritual growth through comfort, inspired by dandelions and Daniel’s faithfulness—even when life feels easy.
Discover why God values weakness and how His strength shines brightest when we admit our need for Him.
Caught in the busyness of life, I nearly missed writing this week—but God reminded me that faith is about small steps, not perfect schedules.
