Made With Light
We were made in the image of a God who is light. In this post, we reflect on what it means to carry His light in a world often overshadowed by darkness. From creation to calling, this blog explores how God’s light shapes our identity and purpose—and how we’re invited to reflect His glory every day.

“Made with Light: Rediscovering the Identity Jesus Spoke Over Us”

There’s a verse Jesus speaks that always stops me in my tracks.

“You are the light of the world.” — Matthew 5:14

He said this during the Sermon on the Mount — before the cross, before the Holy Spirit was poured out, before salvation as we now understand it was even available. So why did He say it? Who was He saying it to?

And most of all… how could He say it?

I’ve often read the Sermon on the Mount as a list of hard things to do, and I’m sure some of you have as well, and that’s okay, but we miss something essential: Jesus begins not with what we must become — but with who we already are.

He says, “You are the light of the world.” Not you will be or try to be. You are. This isn’t flattery. It’s truth. He’s calling something out in us — something ancient. Something we’ve forgotten.

The Light Before the Sun

Go back to the first chapter of Genesis. The very first words God speaks are:

Genesis 1:3 -

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

That light existed before the sun, the moon, or the stars. It was not just physical — it was foundational. It was order, beauty, truth, and goodness breaking into the chaos.

Then just a few verses later:

Genesis 1:26 NKJV - Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image,”

God is light (1 John 1:5). “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”

God is love (1 John 4:8). “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” And we were made in His image.

It hit me the other day — what if Jesus, standing on that mountain, wasn’t telling people who they might one day be… but reminding them of who they were always made to be?

You Were Made With Light

There’s something in this that wrecks me. In a world that constantly tells you to build your brand, earn your worth, hustle to be “somebody,” Jesus says you already are.

He speaks to ordinary fishermen, broken people, doubters, tax collectors, the poor in spirit — and says “You are the light of the world.”

You, made in the image of God. You, born into a broken world, yes — but still carrying the original intention of the Creator.

And Jesus doesn’t just restore us to God — He restores us to ourselves.

A Forgotten Identity

In a way, Jesus’ whole ministry was about reminding people of the light they were made to carry. Yes, we need forgiveness. Yes, we need new life. But before we can walk that path, we need to see that God never forgot what He made us to be.

The fall didn’t erase the image — it fractured it. But the light still flickers. And Jesus comes to reignite it.

When He says, “You are the light of the world,” He’s not laying a burden on our backs. He’s pulling back the veil. He’s showing us what’s already there — calling us to live in it, walk in it, shine with it.

It reminds me of another verse:

“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” — Jeremiah 6:16 (Read my last blog post here)

Maybe the ancient path isn’t just about a lifestyle — maybe it’s about an identity. A way of being human. A light that was spoken into existence long before sin entered the world. A light that still speaks.

You are the light of the world.

Not because you’ve earned it.

Because you were made with it.

Prayer

Lord,

You are light—pure, radiant, and unchanging. Thank You for making us in Your image and calling us to reflect Your light in a world that so often feels dark. Help us to live lives that shine with Your love, grace, and truth. Where we are dim, strengthen us. Where we hide, draw us out. May others see Your light in us and be led closer to You.
