This post dives deep into the invitation to pause, reflect, and walk in the "good way"—the path God designed for our flourishing. If you're tired, spiritually dry, or searching for direction, this is a call to rediscover the rest your soul was made for.

Ask for the Ancient Paths

Jeremiah 6:16 and the Rest We've Forgotten How to Find

“This is what the Lord says:
Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls.
But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’”
— Jeremiah 6:16

There’s a quiet, stubborn ache in the world right now. A restlessness most of us carry. We’re pulled in every direction—fast-paced, overstimulated, constantly moving—and yet somehow, we don’t seem to know where we’re going.

God’s words through Jeremiah cut right through the noise: Stand. Look. Ask.

This isn’t a suggestion to be more mindful. It’s a divine interruption. A stop sign at the intersection of two roads: one man-made and frantic, the other ancient and tested. And it’s here, at the crossroads, that we’re asked to choose.

What Are the Ancient Paths?

These aren’t outdated customs or nostalgic traditions. The ancient paths are the ways of God—unchanging truths that shaped the lives of Abraham, Moses, David. Ways that brought justice, humility, reverence, rest.

They're slow, because they're deep. They're narrow, because they lead somewhere real. And they’re easy to overlook in a culture addicted to shortcuts.

We think we’re evolving. That newer must be better. That forward is the only way worth going. But God says: stop. Look back. Ask for what was always good. And then—walk in it.

We Knew the Way—and Refused It

The most devastating part of this passage isn’t the warning. It’s the response: “But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’”

It’s not that we didn’t know. It’s that we didn’t want to. God pointed out the right road, and we turned away—not out of ignorance, but out of pride.

How often do we do the same? We know what’s right. We know what God is calling us to. We hear the conviction in our hearts, the gentle nudge back to the Word, back to prayer, back to stillness… but we keep walking, headphones in, eyes ahead, heart closed.

And then we wonder why we’re so tired.

Where the Good Way Is

God isn’t asking us to go backwards. He’s asking us to go deeper.

The ancient path is a good path because it leads to Him. And in walking it, we find what we've been longing for: rest. Not a weekend off, not a temporary escape, but real rest—for the soul.

Jesus echoes this same invitation centuries later: “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest… you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28–29). Different words, same voice.

Don’t Rush Past This

This verse isn't just poetic. It's prophetic. It speaks into a generation obsessed with movement but unsure of meaning.

God is still standing at the crossroads with us, offering a way that is older than us, wiser than us, and better than what we’d choose on our own.

So maybe it’s time to slow down. To actually stop. To look at the roads in front of us—and ask. Ask for the old way. Ask for the good way. And most importantly, walk in it.

That’s where the rest is.

Closing Prayer
Lord,
I don’t want to keep rushing past Your voice. Help me to slow down at the crossroads and truly ask for Your ancient paths. Teach me to see the good way—not just what’s familiar or comfortable, but what leads to life and peace. Give me the courage to walk in it, even when it's narrow or costly. And most of all, let my soul find rest in You.
Amen.

- Nathanael Shepherd, Founder & CEO

This post was shaped with the help of AI tools to refine and organize my thoughts.

Sign up to my newsletter so you don’t miss my next blog📩 here

My personal😁 instagram

Follow my photography📸 on instagram

Shop latest products🛒 here

Buy me a coffee☕️ here

This summer I’m taking part in a 84 mile walk to raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.
