Why Worry? | The Life On Pause Blog
A short reflection on Matthew 6:25, the origins of the word "worry," and how God's promises free us from the stranglehold of fear.

Matthew 6:25 NKJV - Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

The song “Why should I worry” - The New Sound Is Family. Came to mind while at work the other day and gave me the idea to write this blog.

It’s a brilliant question, “Why should I worry?” And the simple answer is “You shouldn’t” but it’s easy to say that when we don’t fully understand what we are saying. The modern use of the word normally refers to anxiety.

Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV - Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

But it was not always like this. You see the origin of the word comes from West Germanic translated to old English, which was “Wyrgan” which meant “Strangle” the context normally involved death. This word was evolved to describe how Wolves would kill their prey, by grasping and shaking them. So when someone is worried, are they strangling themselves?

When worry comes, you’ve got a choice. Worry starts with a thought so we can take the thought captive to the obedience of Christ and find comfort and security in his promises. You can dwell on it for awhile and let it control (Strangle) you or you can ignore it, find comfort in God, rest in his word and have assurance that you have everything you need and there is no need to worry.

Worry is often caused by needs, desires, the what might happen?

When we put our trust in God these things start to fade. When we are so close with God we have no worries. Why should we worry? He has given us all our needs. Psalm 23 put this brilliantly. “I shall not want” also translated to “I have everything I need” Not only did David have everything he needed his cup was overflowing. That’s a sure sign the he was given more than he needed.

When we allow worry to take root, we hand over peace in exchange for pressure. But Jesus didn’t invite us to live a life full of anxiety, He invites us into abundance, assurance, and rest. When we remember that worry is like a noose around our neck, we begin to realise how urgently we need to trade it for trust.

The Lord has promised to meet all our needs. If our Shepherd is leading us, we will not lack. So the next time the question rises, “Why should I worry?” You can confidently answer: “I won’t, because God is with me.”

Closing Prayer:

Lord, help me to hand over every anxious thought to You. Teach me to trust You more each day. I know You are my Shepherd, and in You, I lack nothing. Thank You for being faithful, steady, and near. Fill me with Your peace that surpasses understanding. In Jesus’ name, amen.

- Nathanael Shepherd, Founder & CEO

This conclusion was shaped with the help of AI tools to refine and organise my thoughts.

Sign up to my newsletter so you don’t miss my next blog📩 here

My personal😁 instagram

Follow my photography📸 on instagram

Shop latest products🛒 here

Buy me a coffee☕️ here

Worry strangles our peace — but Jesus offers rest.
